Why Are My Instagram Reels Views Low? Likely Causes and Fixes

If your Reels stall at a few hundred views, the problem is usually not "the algorithm" but details you can control. We go through the likely causes, from account status to the first second of the video.

When Reels views stay low, the first thought is often "the algorithm is hiding me". In reality, most causes are controllable: account settings, the technical quality of the video or the first seconds of the content. Work through the list below in order.

Check the account side first

Account status and recommendation eligibility

Settings → Account status tells you whether your content can be recommended to people who don't follow you. If there is a warning here, your Reels are only shown to your followers. Read the reason and appeal if needed.

Recommendation guidelines

Not everything that follows the Community Guidelines gets recommended. The recommendation guidelines limit certain types, such as sensitive topics, misleading health claims or low-quality content, on Explore and Reels. If your content is close to that line, reach beyond your followers drops.

Causes in the video itself

Another app's watermark

Videos downloaded from another platform with its logo on them are deprioritised in recommendations. Upload the video from the original file.

Low resolution and the wrong aspect ratio

A vertical 9:16 ratio at 1080×1920 is the standard. Blurry videos, black bars or horizontal footage make viewers swipe away quickly.

A slow opening

Viewers decide in the first seconds whether to stay. Instead of a logo animation or a "hi everyone" intro, show the result, the question or the most interesting frame straight away.

Copyrighted music

Videos with unlicensed music can be muted or have their reach limited. Business accounts have a narrower music library; prefer the commercially cleared sounds the app offers.

Posting habits

Scattered topics

When every video is about something different, Instagram struggles to learn who to show your content to. Stick to a few topics. For an overall growth strategy, see our guide to growing Instagram followers organically.

Deleting and re-uploading

Deleting a low-performing video and uploading the same file again usually doesn't change the outcome. Make a new version instead, with a different opening, cover or caption.

Which metrics should you watch?

In Reels insights, look at average watch time, retention in the first seconds and shares. If watch time is short, the problem is the opening; if shares are low, it's the value of the content.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a Reel be?

There is no single right length; what matters is that people watch to the end. If what you have to say is short, keep the video short too and don't pad it.

Do hashtags increase Reels views?

Hashtags describe the topic but don't bring views on their own. The strength of the opening and the watch time matter far more.

Is shadowbanning real?

Instagram doesn't use the term "shadowban", but it does show on the Account status screen when content isn't eligible for recommendations. If your reach dropped suddenly, check that screen first.
