How Should Small Businesses Set a Meta Ads Budget?
· 3 min read

The answer to "how much should I spend on Meta ads?" lies in your target cost. We explain the learning phase, budget types and how to test safely on a small budget.
There's no fixed "right number" for a Facebook and Instagram ads budget. The right budget depends on your product's profit, how much you can pay to win a customer and how much data the ad system needs to learn.
First, set the goal and an acceptable cost
Campaign objective
The objective you choose in Ads Manager (sales, leads, traffic, awareness) determines what the system optimises for. For small businesses, starting with one clear objective is usually best.
Target cost
Work out the most you can pay for a sale or a lead. For example, if you make an average gross profit of 300 TRY on a product, paying more than 300 TRY per sale means a loss. This figure is the basis of your budget calculation.
The learning phase and budget
According to Meta, an ad set exits the learning phase once it reaches about 50 optimisation events (e.g. 50 purchases) within 7 days of its last significant edit. Results fluctuate during this phase.
A rough calculation: your target cost × 50 ÷ 7 ≈ the suggested daily budget for learning. If that's beyond your budget, consider optimising for a more frequent event (such as add to cart or a lead form).
Daily or lifetime budget?
- Daily budget: the average amount spent each day. Suitable for always-on campaigns; Meta may spend a little more on some days and less on others, but won't exceed the weekly average limit.
- Lifetime budget: a total amount for a set date range. Suitable for promotions and time-limited campaigns.
Testing safely on a small budget
- Start with one campaign, one ad set and two or three ad creatives.
- Avoid frequent edits in the first few days; every significant change restarts learning.
- After a week, check the cost per result; if it's below target, increase the budget gradually.
- Make sure the page the ad leads to (product page, form) is fast and clear; even the best ad can't rescue a weak page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between "Boost post" and Ads Manager?
Boosting a post is quick, but targeting and optimisation options are limited. For sales or lead objectives, Ads Manager gives you more control.
Can I double my budget at once?
Large, sudden increases can restart the learning phase. Increasing the budget gradually on a well-performing ad set gives more predictable results.
How long do ads take to work?
The learning phase usually covers the first days; look at at least a week of data for a meaningful evaluation. The exact time depends on your budget and how often your target event happens.
