How to Make a YouTube Thumbnail: Sizes, Rules and Tips
· 2 min read

The thumbnail is your video's shop window in search and recommendations. Here are the correct dimensions, YouTube's file rules and the principles of a design that still reads on a small screen.
Viewers often decide whether to open a video just by looking at the title and the thumbnail. A good thumbnail represents the content honestly and stays readable even on a small phone screen.
Technical sizes and rules
YouTube's recommended values for a custom thumbnail:
- Resolution: 1280×720 pixels (minimum width 640 pixels)
- Aspect ratio: 16:9
- File type: JPG, PNG or GIF (non-animated)
- File size: below the limit stated on YouTube's help page (currently 2 MB)
To upload custom thumbnails, your account must be verified (phone verification). Thumbnails are also subject to the Community Guidelines; misleading or inappropriate images can be removed.
Principles of a thumbnail that gets clicks
One focal point
Have a single main element: a face, a product or a result. Lots of small elements turn into clutter on a phone.
Little, large text
If you use text, keep it to three or four words and don't repeat the title; the thumbnail should complement it. Avoid the bottom-right corner, where the video duration appears.
High contrast
There should be a clear colour and brightness difference between the background and the main element. Check how it looks in both light and dark themes.
Honesty
A thumbnail that promises something the video doesn't deliver may earn clicks briefly, but viewers leave straight away. Watch time drops, which works against the video in recommendations.
Test & compare
The Test & compare feature in YouTube Studio lets you try several thumbnails for one video and measure which one earns more watch time. Use it to decide with data rather than guesswork.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the thumbnail after publishing?
Yes, you can change it any time in YouTube Studio. Trying a better thumbnail on older videos is a common way to improve them.
Can I upload a custom thumbnail for Shorts?
Thumbnail options for Shorts differ from long videos and can vary by app version. Check the current options on the upload screen in the YouTube app.
Do I need a face in my thumbnail?
No. Faces are common because they convey emotion quickly, but a product, a result or a single strong image can do the same job.
